#11 See the deserts of Santa Fe from a bird's eye view

I'm a fan of nature. I'm a camper, as I've mentioned before. I love kayaking, canoeing, hiking, swimming, and all the usual outdoorsy activities. I love observing the scene around me, especially when I'm away from the endless sea of ridiculously flat land that encompasses basically the entirety of my home state of Illinois.

So, whenever I'm lucky enough to visit my grandparents in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I spend a large chunk of time admiring the postcard-perfect mountains around me. Thus naturally, it sounded like a fantastic idea to hike up the large hill (or what I'd like to call a "mini mountain" to help my pride) across from their house when I last visited a few years ago.

The hike really wasn't difficult. It was actually my second time doing it, and now that my mom and I actually knew where the path was unlike our first attempt, it was mostly smooth sailing to the top.

Getting back down was the problem.

For whatever reason, luck was just not on my side on that sunny day in June. I'm not sure if it was the glare of the intense rays bouncing off my sunglasses, or just pure disregard of where I was walking. I bet it was a combination of both. But regardless, I made a hard, embarrassing fall right into the lap of a lovely cactus.

Now, I'm not sure why I'm sharing this story because my original purpose here is to tell you all the great things about Santa Fe and why everyone should visit, but I think what I'm trying to say is that while nature can be harmful, it's worth appreciating when you're in a place as beautiful as Santa Fe.

Although I had never been more embarrassed in my whole life as I laid in my grandparents' living room, having needles pulled out of my blood-stained thighs, I didn't regret going on the hike. It had been a little challenging and I was tired once I got to the top, but that view was worth the work and the eventual wound to my pride.

If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself.
